Mix gin and vermouth in a cocktail shaker with cracked ice. Shake and strain into a chilled martini glass. Add olive.
Of course, there are at least as many ways to make a martini as there are martini drinkers. This is a basic recipe. You will almost certainly want to modify this to your tastes. Half of the fun of the martini is arguing with others about the right way to make a martini.

If you’re bored with the basic, but don’t know what to try, here are some common variations on this classic drink:
- Feel free to change the ratio of gin to vermouth. A 6:1 martini seems to be fairly standard, but some other common ratios you might hear are:
- 3:1 or even 2:1 – The classic martini.
- 12:1 – A dry martini.
- 20:1 – A very dry martini. Approximately what you get if you swirl vermouth in the glass and pour out the excess.
- Add gin while looking at a picture of the man who invented vermouth. Winston Churchill’s favorite.
- Stir gin and vermouth instead of shaking. This results in a less cloudy drink and, according to many martini fans, keeps from “bruising” the gin.
- Use a different garnish. Popular alternatives to the cocktail olive include:
- Cocktail onion
- Black olive
- JallepeƱo pepper or peperocini
- Mini pickles
- Maraschino cherry
- Dried apricot
- Add a bit of olive juice for a “dirty” martini.
- Substitute vodka for gin. Think James Bond.
- Use flavored vodkas instead of gin to add a different base flavor
- Add a small amount of an accent alchohol such as Midori or Campari, or use a splash of fruit juice such as cranberry juice
- If all else fails, just start to tell a friend how to make a martini. They’ll be sure to tell you exactly how you should make a martini.
